Chin reduction is usually resorted to by a person to make his or her face harmonious with the contours of the body. In many cases, the chin is weak due to a congenital problem or it may lose its firmness or structure due to age related issues or due to trauma. Many others go for chin reduction to get a better facial feature or better overall personality. In other words, a chin reduction surgery is done on a person in order to correct the oversized protruding chin and to bring it in conformity with the other parts of the body especially the neck, chest and upper part of the body.
Chin reduction surgery must be performed by skilled surgeons. Although the surgery is not a long drawn affair it should be carried out only after a detailed evaluation of the overall health of the patient. The patients must be in good shape both physically and mentally and should have only realistic expectations about the surgery. Firstly, they must be free from bone disorders, a prerequisite in such type of surgery where the bone on the chin is the most affected. In case the person is found unfit for surgery another route called the facial liposuction can also be explored. The patient should avoid aspirin at all costs before the surgery and also non steroid anti inflammatory drugs. The latter should be avoided at least one week before the surgery.
The entire surgical process does not take more than two to three hours. The surgeon makes an incision inside the mouth either near the lower lip or inside the chin. The surgeon then detaches the bone which is situated at the tip of the chin and then reshapes it. This is done by removing the excess bone and aligning it with the contour. The tip is repositioned with the remaining chin and is held together by wires and plates. Lastly, the incision is sutured and the recovery process begins.
