Compare Laser Hair Removal Gadgets:
Tria, Rio, Silk'n, NoNo & Boots Smooth Skin Review

On the market now there are a lot of new home laser hair removal gadgets, all of different shapes and sizes, and all using different technology and costing across a massive range of prices. This is a home laser hair removal review and guide to help you understand what your options are. We directly compare the Tria, the NoNo, compare the silk'n and Rio, and of course we review the Smooth Skin from Boots.

Comparison Chart:

  • Permanence
    1. TRIA

Unsurprisingly Tria wins on permanence hands down - probably because it’s the only unit which uses the same laser technology used by doctors and dermatologists. It has clinical trials that back up our permanence ratings & it’s the only one that has an FDA approval. You are paying a good sum of money for this, but you get technology that will definitely deliver results.

    2. Silk'n

The Silk’n is a home pulsed light and not actual laser hair removal, but it seems to be the most effective out of our runners up. It’s not permanent but it’s a lot better than razors.

      £379.99

    3. Smooth Skin by Boots

With a similar setup to the Silk’n, the Smooth skin by boots is quite good. A safe middle ground, however you will find yourself having to come back and use it regularly, and certain areas of hair return quicker than others.

      £249.99

    4. RIO Laser

If you can get the RIO to work it should last for a little while, but the only reason that this is not in the last place is because the No No is somehow worse.

      £159.99
      Click to buyMore details
    5. No! No!

The No No is basically only a little better than shaving. Since it works by buring the hair they will return very quickly. Not quite as quickly as shaving, but in terms of permanance this is a clear looser.

      £138.95

  • Ease Of Use
    1. No! No!

There is no confusion on how to use the No No, it is very easy. It requires a lot of effort, and it hurts. It’s not a quick fix and it is in no way permanant (see permanence), but it is easy to understand how to use.

      £138.95
      Click to buyMore details
    2. Tria

The Tria is very easy to understand how to use. Once charged the free standing gun-like-unit just needs to be pointed at the correct part of the skin. This is second place as the NoNo beats it on size - the Tria technology requires a much larger unit - it is still very simple to use though.

      £675.00
      Click to buyMore details
    3. Smooth Skin by Boots

Again, another nice simple unit. The hand unit is quite small and through a kind of hose it attaches to the base unit which is a little more cumbersome - hence 3rd place. The head unit is quite small and it is easy to aim appropriately.

      £249.99
      Click to buyMore details
    4. Silk'n

The Silk’n is a bit clunkier with a larger head and similar base unit to the So Smooth that the head bolts into. It is not unusable by far, but neither is it the best.

      £379.99
      Click to buyMore details
    5. RIO Laser

The RIO got a lot of complaints when it comes to usability. The main complaint was the plastic head was too big, making it hard to accurately target the areas which you want to remove hair from.

      £159.99

  • Pain
    1. RIO Laser

The RIO wins in this category as it is practically pain less. This is a device which while not permanent, is going to be very easy to use on a regular basis.

      £159.99
      Click to buyMore details
    2. Tria

Even on the highest setting the Tria just makes a small pinging when used. It is pretty much painless, though there is some sensation. There are three sensors attached to the unit to make sure that it is making a good connection to the skin before you can activate it. These sensors ensure that you can not activate it unless good contact is made, meaning there is very little chance that you cause yourself any pain unless you actively try to. you can

    3. Silk'n

The Silk’n Home Pulsed Light is pretty light on the skin. This is not the best in this category, there can be some stronger feeling as you use it, but you can still easily do this whilst watching the telly with little discomfort.

      £379.99

    4. Smooth Skin by Boots

Again this is a very tightly faught battle, there is not much difference between this and the Silk'n home pulsed laser. The Smooth skin is a pretty smooth operator too.

    5. No! No!

It burns. It burns. It really burns. The No No has to be our most painful, since it works by burning the hair off you. If you slip you can end up with some lines of burns which can be felt up to a week later. It is in no way life threatening, and if you are careful you can keep the burns to a minimum, but this is easily enough to put the No No in 5th place for pain.

  • Value for Money
    1. No! No!

In this category the No No wins out purely because of its low price tag. The No No does the job, and for the least amount of money. It requires a lot more work and is far from painless, with reports of the burns being felt a week later (see pain), but it is very cheap.

      £138.95
      Click to buyMore details
    2. TRIA

At £675 this may seem an odd choice for second place seeing as it’s the most expensive. The reason we choose this is because the Tria uses actual Laser Hair removal technology. In the long term, it easily offers the best life time value, and when you compare this to the price of going to a clinic for laser removal it works out very favourable. As it has a high permanance rating you could potentially sell it on afterwards.

      £675.00
      Click to buyMore details
    3. RIO Laser

The RIO has a good price tag, and they place themselves well in the market in terms of affordability. The effectiveness of it is in question, but it is definitely well priced.

      £159.99
      Click to buyMore details
    4. Smooth Skin by Boots

Much the same as the RIO price wise, but slightly better built and slightly more powerful. Same as the Rio, this doesn’t kill the hair growth so does not offer much permanence.

      £249.99
      Click to buyMore details
    5. Silk'n

Even though it is slightly more effective than the RIO, since it does not offer a treatment which is comparative to salon laser hair removal, the extra cost does not reflect the increase in value. Whilst it does do well in terms of effectiveness, it has suffered here due to expensive price tag being far over the increase in technology.

Ease of use

Shave, or trim, the area to be treated. Once on choose your correct skin tone. The gentlest setting is dark, then medium, then fair. If in doubt, choose a darker setting. Cooling Activator gel needs to be applied to the treatment area, one small section at a time. A red light will stops flashing and remains constant to indicate the device is ready. The handset is held against the skin and the trigger button turns red to indicate correct positioning. To activate the trigger button is pressed and causes a flash. The device is then Moved to next treatment area and repeated. It treats a 3*3 Area in one shot.

Pain

Slight tingling sensation and warmth around the area, but it shouldn’t hurt. However, some areas of the body are more sensitive than others and the extent of the tingling sensation may vary among different people.

How many treatments

Continuous regular weekly (or every two weeks) use will give good results within 6 to 12 weeks, (darker skin may take longer).

Where on the body

Most areas of the body can be treated with the Boots Smooth Skin system with the exception of the face and the mucus membranes of the body e.g. inside nostrils, ears, labial folds, anus etc.

Contraindications

Children under the age of 16 should not use Boots Smooth Skin. This is because hormone balances in the body are unstable and new hair growth is rapid. We recommend any users age 16 to 18 years old operate the machine under adult supervision. Remember, hair reduction will be permanent. Because the system uses Intense Pulsed Light it is not suitable for all skin types and should not be used on very dark brown or black skin.

Portability

Device is ‘bulky’ main unit needs to be resting on flat surface

Permanence

iPulse has been used for several years in professional salons and clinics and results are clinically proven. This product has been tested in independent trials and Boots experts have thoroughly tested the product for safety.

No! No!

Technology

ThermiconTM technology, this is not laser or IPL it uses heat to to treat the hair

Safety

Ease of use

Skin needs to be clean and dry. ThermiconTM Tip has to be selected for long or short hair growth. The No No has to be held at a 90º angle and glided across the skin slowly in one direction, pulling towards your body with the signal light facing you. Speed can be adjusted as necessary but one section has to be treated at a time. The ThermiconTM Tip needs to be kept clean during treatment and needs to be checked frequently. If you begin a section with the ThermiconTM Tip for long hair you will need to switch to the ThermiconTM Tip for stubble before finishing a section. Following treatment buff and apply a moisturizing lotion.

RIO Laser

Technology

IPL

Safety

Ease of use

The best results are on hairs which are only 1-3 mm long, the hair should be trimmed before treatment. Alternatively, you can shave before treatment as long as the hair is still visible at the root.

Pain

Generally no perceptible changes will be apparent. A slight redness after treatment may occur but will normally fade over 24 hours. Any localised redness after treatment is caused by the destruction of the hair follicles and is quite normal.

How many treatments

Laser hair removal is generally considered to be effective after 6 treatments over a 6 month period.

Where on the body

Most body hair can be removed using Laser Hair Removal - the most common areas are the face, underarms, legs, chest, back and bikini line. We do NOT recommend using laser hair removal on eyebrows.

Contraindications

None

Portability

Base must be on a flat surface for use

Permanence

Silk’n Distributed By Wigmore Medical In UK

Technology

Home Pulsed Light

Safety

Silk’n has been designed with eye safety in mind, and special eye protection is not required. The unique safety system of the Silk’n™ applicator assures safe and proper treatment on the target hairs only when the applicator tip is placed firmly on the treatment area. Some flashing light will be seen around the side of the treatment area, but is not harmful and similar to what one sees from a camera flash.

Ease of use

The hairs shaved down to skin level.

Pain

When used properly most users of Silk’n report feeling a slight sensation of heat at the time of the pulse of light. Users with thicker and darker hairs may feel slightly more discomfort, but this discomfort subsides once a treatment is completed. For your convenience Silk’n has five setting levels that can be used according to your sensitivity and desired result.

How many treatments

The hair removal results for each person can be varied for many reasons. Hair color, density and location on the body all have an impact of the ultimate result. Environment may also play a role. Another important factor affecting you hair removal result is the hair growth cycle, which is typically 18-24 months. During this period multiple Silk'n treatments may be required in order to achieve the best long-term hair removal result. 6-12 treatments may be necessary

Where on the body

Silk’n is not recommended for use on the face or neck. Unlike body hair, most of women’s potential facial hair remains inactive and hidden, while only a fraction of it grows and surfaces. Exposing facial hair to the light pulses of Silk’n may remove apparent hair but simultaneously stimulate unwanted growth of hidden hair. The Silk’n device has been designed for body treatments anywhere below the neck. The most common areas treated with Silk’n are: legs, underarms, arms and bikini line. Silk’n is not recommended for use on the face, and may not be suitable for everyone

Contraindications

Silk’n is not recommended for use on the face or neck Treating dark skin with Silkn™ can result in adverse effects such as burns, blisters, and skin color changes (hyper- or hypo-pigmentation)

Portability

Device base needs to be rested on flat surface before it can be used

Permanence

Silk'n™ has been tested in a multi-center clinical study that took place in North America and Israel and involved over 150 female patients. Results shown after 6 months of treatment and not beyond this point.
